Pinhole Surgical Technique™ – Bloomington IL

What is PST™?

The Pinhole Surgical Technique™ (PST™) is also known as Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™ or Lunchtime Gum Lift™. PST™ was developed and patented by Dr. John Chao of Los Angeles who published the technique in the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry in October of 2012. Dr. Noraian is among an elite group of 550 dentists and periodontists trained and certified by Dr. Chao to provide the Pinhole Surgical Technique™.

The Pinhole Surgical Technique™ is accomplished by making a small pinhole in the soft part of the gum and using special instruments to free up the gum tissue to move around the neck of the teeth. Then, collagen strips are used to secure the tissue and help hold it in place. This new method is easier on the patient with more comfort and without using stitches.

What are Receding Gums?

Many times receding gums are associated with the symptoms of gum disease. However, gum recession may result in inadequate tooth brushing, overly aggressive tooth brushing, certain medications that affect gum health or just having inherited thin gums genetically. Orthodontic treatment and appliances like retainers or the braces themselves may be responsible for gum recession.

Why consider PST™?

Unlike traditional gum grafting, the Pinhole Surgery Technique™ is a minimally invasive approach making it a much less painful solution. Over the years,Dr. Noraian has been involved with the evolution of gum grafting which started by harvesting connective tissue from the roof the mouth for transplantation over the area where the gum receded and securing the tissue with stitches. These connective tissue grafts have an extended recovery period and are among the most uncomfortable procedures offered in periodontics. Then, Dr. Noraian moved to using donor tissues, first donor skin and then donor placenta, both of which are human acellular donor tissues that only require the making of one wound to receive the graft rather than the two wounds required for connective tissue grafting. The donor tissues were much more comfortable than the previous method, placenta ended up taking over using the donor skin because the healing of the wound ended up being gentler.
