Endodontic Surgery
What is an Apicoectomy?
The video on the right illustrates this simple procedure.
Dr. Noraian may perform an apicoectomy when a previously treated root canal becomes reinfected, and the position of the tooth root is easily accessible without jeopardizing other important structures in the mouth. Typically, Dr. Noraian makes an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue of the infected tooth. Dr. Noraian will remove the damaged tissue along with the end of the root tip. If the root tip is not sealed, to prevent infection, Dr. Noraian may place a root-end filling and a human donor bone graft with a barrier, and suture the gum. Over time, the bone heals around the root restoring full function.
Following the procedure, while the incision heals, you may have some discomfort or slight swelling which is common for any surgical procedure. To alleviate any discomfort, Dr. Noraian will recommend appropriate pain medication and an antibiotic. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call his office in Bloomington at Bloomington IL Office Phone Number 309-663-4577.
